                               67                            In the early 1960s after a two year
                               LEONARD FREED                 journey hitchhiking through Europe
                               (1929–2006)                   and North Africa, Freed returned
                                                             to America. He embarked on a
                               Harlem, New York City,        project which was going to define
                               1963                          his career; the documentation
                                                             of Harlem and the Deep South,
